- Iran held a third day of talks with Qatari mediators in Doha on ending the US-Iran war, and Monday it said contacts continue even though the round ended with no breakthrough. Its foreign minister says the Strait of Hormuz reopens only if Washington accepts Tehran's conditions.
- As of 11:38 AM ET, crude is down about 6.2% and Brent-linked oil about 6.7% from Friday's close. Airline stocks are up about 5.3% and Qatari stocks about 4.4%, while energy stocks are down about 2.6%.
- Crude has now given back about 42% of its rise since Oct 5 and is still up about 10.0% over that stretch. No date for the next round is set; Tuesday's midterm elections and Friday's jobs report at 8:30 AM ET are the next scheduled tests.
Key numbers
An Iranian delegation spent the weekend in Doha with Qatari mediators working on a way to end the US-Iran war, with no direct US-Iran talks planned. On Monday Iran said the round had ended without a breakthrough but that contacts continue. State media said Iran's Supreme Leader has given the government authority for talks, and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that if the US accepts Iran's conditions, the Strait of Hormuz will reopen and negotiations will resume. The strait is still dangerous: Iran's navy said a commercial vessel hit a sea mine and caught fire east of Hormuz on Monday.
Why markets care
Hormuz is the main exit for Gulf oil, and both Iran and the US have blockaded it during eight months of war, so any path to reopening it goes straight into the price of crude. Cheaper oil works its way through to fuel costs, which is why airline stocks move opposite to crude. It also eases the inflation worry, which helps explain long Treasuries up about 0.6% Monday. Qatar is the mediator and a large gas exporter, so its stocks trade on the talks too. Energy stocks lose the most if the war premium in oil comes out.
What's priced in
The market is pricing progress, not a deal. As of 11:38 AM ET, crude is down about 6.2% and Brent-linked oil about 6.7% from Friday's close, the steepest one-day drop in this month's run, and crude is at its lowest since Oct 15. It has given back about 42% of its rise since Oct 5 but is still up about 10.0% over that stretch, and the tracked oil story only ends if the crude proxy falls back below 150, against about 158 now. Airline stocks are up about 5.3%, Qatari stocks about 4.4% and energy stocks down about 2.6%. Not everything reads as peace: defense stocks are up about 2.3% and gold about 2.2%, after gold fell about 3.5% on Friday. The S&P proxy is up about 0.6% and the vol proxy down about 4.5%. A signed framework would leave room for more of the October premium to come out; talks breaking down would put Friday's highs back in play.

What X is saying
Accounts report Brent futures fell more than $8 a barrel on hopes for progress, and posts citing a diplomat said mediators are working to bridge remaining gaps. Others point to the gap between the two sides: posts quote a US official saying Iran must offer nuclear concessions before talks with Washington resume, and Iranian officials saying the naval blockade must end first. Posts also say a major bank raised its fourth-quarter Brent forecast to $108 on Monday. These are claims and views from posts, not confirmed facts.
What to watch
No date for a next round has been announced, and Secretary of State Rubio said Saturday he didn't know if the Qatar-led talks have a timeline. Posts citing reports say the mediation aims to head off a possible military operation after the midterms, so Tuesday's elections are the next date the story could turn on. More ship incidents near Hormuz are the other tell. On the calendar, Friday's October jobs report at 8:30 AM ET (prior 29,000, forecast 55,000) is the first big read on whether cheaper oil changes the inflation debate.
- CoolingOil keeps climbingCrude is down about 6.2% Monday on the Iran talks and has given back about 42% of its rise since Oct 5, though at about 158 the crude proxy is still above the 150 line that ends the story.
