- The week's boldest single-stock bet was about $23.5M of Tesla April 2027 $390 calls, bought at the ask in two prints five minutes apart on Oct 27, on a strike with only 222 contracts open.
- Insiders: director Mitchell Jacobson bought about $29.0M of MSC Industrial stock on Oct 23, Nippon Life added about $20.2M of Corebridge, and Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon sold about $10.9M of shares on Oct 27.
- Most of the other big trades look like protection: puts on Royal Caribbean and Cadence after both rallied on earnings, and $17.4M of volatility-index calls into the Fed and the Nov 3 midterms. Flow is a clue, not a signal.
Key numbers
At 9:31 AM ET on Oct 27, someone bought 2,150 Tesla calls at the $390 strike expiring April 16, 2027, for about $11.5M. Five minutes later the same contract traded again for about $12.0M, at the ask both times, on a strike where only 222 contracts had been open. That is about $23.5M of premium that needs Tesla above roughly $445 at expiry to come out ahead. Tesla traded at about $402 at 11:37 AM ET Wednesday, down about 1.3% on the day.
The biggest bets
Tesla was not alone. A buyer also paid about $8.3M at the ask for Tesla's December 2027 $480 calls the same morning, which puts about $32M of fresh, long-dated call premium on one stock in under an hour. Apple drew the largest single-name total, about $30.8M across four prints in the January 2028 $310 calls just after 3:00 PM ET on Oct 27, but only about $9.3M of that traded at the ask, which looks more like a position being moved than a new bet. The earnings calendar lists Apple's next report for Nov 2 after the close.
The put side was all about protection after good news. Royal Caribbean rose about 5.5% on its Oct 27 report, and at 9:54 AM ET someone traded 8,000 March 2027 $270 puts for about $14.0M against 176 open contracts. Cadence, the chip-design software maker, jumped about 6.5% the day after its Oct 26 report, and a buyer then swept 10,000 January 2027 $300 puts for about $12.6M. Both strikes sit roughly 8% and 12% below the stocks' current prices, which is where holders tend to buy insurance after a run.

Insiders and funds
The week's biggest open-market insider purchase was MSC Industrial, where director and 10% owner Mitchell Jacobson bought 250,000 shares on Oct 23 at about $115.94, roughly $29.0M, per a filing dated Oct 27. The stock traded near $122 Wednesday morning, up about 3.4%. Nippon Life, already a 10% owner, bought about 596,000 Corebridge Financial shares on Oct 23 for about $20.2M. On the sell side, Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon sold 12,000 shares on Oct 27 at about $910.72, roughly $10.9M.
Reading the flow
Size alone says little. The single largest cluster of the week was about $866M across four S&P index option legs at 2:49 PM ET on Oct 22, the shape of a fund rolling or financing a position rather than taking a view. The volatility-index calls look like insurance too: about $17.4M of February 2027 22-strike calls bought at the ask on Oct 26, which pay only if fear rises well into the new year. Across all listed options, puts traded at 0.77 for every call on Oct 27, down from 0.87 on Oct 22, so the overall tape leaned less defensive as the week went on. Flow is a clue, not a signal: a big call can be one leg of a hedge, and a put can protect shares the buyer still likes. What would confirm the Tesla read is open interest at the $390 strike holding near 4,300 contracts in the coming days.
What X is saying
Flow accounts piled onto the Tesla prints within minutes, with one post saying someone bought more than $23 million of calls in just 5 minutes. On Cadence, posts tie the stock's jump to a beat and a raised full-year outlook, and flow accounts called the $300 puts bearish. On Royal Caribbean, one account notes the $270 puts printed as a cross, so the side isn't on the tape.
- HeatingThe AI spending boomCadence, which sells the software used to design AI chips, jumped about 6.5% after its Oct 26 report, and someone then paid about $12.6M for January puts to protect that gain.
