Monday, October 26 has no major economic release on the calendar, so the open trades the weekend’s Iran headlines through crude. President Trump told reporters on Sunday there would be no US strike that day, and Qatar’s mediation with Tehran continued. Oil is lower on that, but nothing has been agreed, and Iran is promising a crushing response to any attack.

Setup into the open

Friday closed Choppy. The S&P proxy fell about 0.5%, the Dow proxy about 1.2% and crude jumped about 4.3%. As of about 6:15 AM ET the board is mildly green. The S&P proxy is +0.22%, the Nasdaq proxy +0.15%, small caps +0.24% and the Dow proxy +0.44%. Crude is −2.32% and energy −0.92%. The vol proxy is −1.71%, long Treasuries +0.25% and gold +0.43%. The dollar hasn’t traded since Friday, and Bitcoin is near $80,330, about +1.1% since midnight.

What to watch

Friday night had no notable reports. Verizon reports this morning with an EPS estimate of $1.27 and an implied move of about 3.7%; it is +0.74% premarket. Apple is −1.39% with no confirmed catalyst.

After the close: Welltower ($1.64, about 5.5%), Cadence Design ($2.04, about 6.5%), Nucor ($5.71, about 7.8%), Public Storage ($4.27, about 4.9%) and Celestica ($3.02, about 11.7%). The Fed meets Tuesday and decides Wednesday at 2:00 PM ET.

What X is saying

Posts say WTI fell about 2.4% to near $101 a barrel overnight after the no-strike comment and reports of Qatari mediation. Accounts report Trump also said it was getting to be decision time on a deal or more attacks. Posts say HSBC raised oil to overweight and trimmed gold. These are unconfirmed.

Insight

This is a relief bounce in a headline market, not a new trend. The move is mostly oil coming off a six-month high, and stocks are barely up. A pause of one day is not a deal, so crude can retake the loss on the next strike headline. The bigger tests are Wednesday’s Fed decision and the big tech reports after it.

Desk stance

Publish mood is Choppy, matching Friday’s close. If crude holds its drop and the S&P proxy stays green through the first hour, the 9:45 refresh could move to Waiting or Grinding. A fresh jump in oil would keep it Choppy or worse.
