Wednesday, October 21 flipped Tuesday around. On Tuesday most stocks rose while big tech sat out. Today big tech and chips did the lifting and the average stock lagged. The S&P proxy closed +0.53% and the vol proxy fell 0.85%, which scores Grinding, above the 0.4% line. That is a step up from Tuesday's Calm close, and the index has now risen three days in a row.

Research

What the tape confirms: the Nasdaq proxy gained 1.06% and the Dow proxy 0.64%, while small caps added only 0.25% and the equal-weight S&P ETF 0.34%, well short of the index. Long Treasuries edged up 0.15%, the dollar proxy was flat at +0.07%, the crude proxy slipped 0.53% and gold rose 0.34%. Bitcoin finished about 2% higher near $84,600.

Leadership came from tech. The chip ETF rose 1.86% and the tech sector 1.67%, with AMD +3.36%, Nvidia +2.49%, Micron +1.96%, Apple +1.34% and Broadcom +0.99%. Tesla gained 3.44% going into its report, and industrials added 0.90%. Communication services was the worst sector at −1.11%, with AT&T −6.45%, T-Mobile −2.53%, Verizon −2.17% and Alphabet −1.65%. Real estate fell 0.79% and health care 0.51%.

Company news drove the biggest moves. SpaceX (ticker SPCX) closed +7.77% at $159.28 after its first quarterly report as a public company, and Super Micro rose 9.49%. Danaher gained 4.36%, United Airlines 4.00%, Capital One 2.44% and Thermo Fisher 1.04% after their reports. Netflix closed −5.30% at $65.05 and Intuitive Surgical −2.27%. Abbott (−1.84%), Elevance (−1.37%) and Philip Morris (−1.22%) also fell after reporting this morning.

After the bell, Meta traded near $724, about 3.7% above its $698.43 close. IBM traded about 2.5% higher, SAP about 4.4% and CSX about 4.2%. Lam Research traded near $244, about 6.5% lower, Texas Instruments about 1.0% lower and Tesla about 0.3% lower. On the economic calendar there were no U.S. releases today. Company actuals are not on the calendar yet: Meta (estimate $3.45), Tesla ($0.45), Lam ($2.17), TI ($2.40), IBM ($2.88), SAP ($2.03) and AT&T ($0.61) all show estimates only.

What X is saying

The main story on X was SpaceX. Posts said its first profit as a public company and fast growth in its AI business revived the AI trade, pulling chips back up a day after they lagged. Several accounts linked AT&T's drop to the same report, with Starlink seen as a growing threat to telecom. Posts also described Super Micro as raising its outlook. Some accounts pointed to an attack on a Saudi oil field keeping crude prices high, but the crude proxy actually finished lower, so that story did not show up in the tape here.

On earnings, posts describe Meta as reporting $64.6B in revenue, up 26% from a year ago and above estimates near $63.4B, with fourth-quarter revenue guidance of $73B to $76B. Reported EPS of $3.83 was pulled down by a large legal charge, and accounts disagree on whether to call it a miss. Tesla is reported at $0.48 adjusted EPS against about $0.45 expected, on revenue near $28.05B, roughly in line. Texas Instruments is reported at $2.62 EPS and $6.06B revenue, both ahead of estimates, with a fourth-quarter outlook above the street. Lam is reported at $8.22B revenue, slightly ahead, yet the stock fell. IBM is reported as beating on revenue and EPS. All of these figures are street-reported and unconfirmed.

Insight

What is locked for the close: Grinding mood, S&P proxy +0.53%, vol lower, tech leading and the average stock lagging. Monday and Wednesday were narrow, tech-led days, and Tuesday was the broad day in between. Money is swinging between big tech and everything else instead of leaving the market, and the index keeps climbing either way. The early after-hours read on Meta is positive, but Lam's drop is a reminder that chip stocks can still sell off on good numbers when expectations are high.

Thursday's lookahead: weekly jobless claims land at 8:30 AM ET (prior 199K), with leading indicators at 10:00 AM ET (prior −0.1%) and the Kansas City Fed survey at 11:00 AM ET (prior 20); no forecasts are posted. Before the open, Procter & Gamble (EPS est $1.89, expected move about 2.6%), Union Pacific ($3.47), Valero ($21.28), Lockheed Martin ($7.49, about 3.7%), Spotify ($3.10, about 7.2%), Blackstone ($1.26), Comcast ($0.98) and Honeywell ($2.17) report. After the close it's Newmont ($1.94), Western Digital ($4.09, about 7.0%), Bloom Energy ($0.71), Comfort Systems ($12.70) and Deckers ($1.82). Friday brings the flash manufacturing and services PMIs (priors 57 and 58.7) and the final University of Michigan survey (prior 48.1).
