Tuesday, October 20 flipped Monday's market around. On Monday a few big tech names carried the index while most stocks fell. Today most stocks rose and big tech sat it out. The S&P proxy closed +0.33% and the vol proxy fell 0.90%, which scores Calm, below the 0.4% line for Grinding. That is a step down from Monday's Grinding close on the headline number, but the day underneath was much broader.

Research

What the tape confirms: small caps gained 1.66% and the Dow proxy 1.05%, while the Nasdaq proxy slipped 0.12%. The equal-weight S&P ETF rose 1.16%, the mirror image of Monday's −0.33%. Long Treasuries rose 0.82%, so yields came down, the dollar proxy fell 0.29%, the crude proxy was roughly flat at −0.11% and gold lost 0.52%. Bitcoin finished about +0.9% near $82,750.

Leadership came from outside tech. Health care was the best sector at +2.37%, with Eli Lilly +3.59% and UnitedHealth +3.06%. Homebuilders gained 2.19%, regional banks 1.96%, utilities 1.23%, real estate 1.69% and financials 1.19%. Tech lagged: the chip ETF fell 0.37%, with Micron −0.99%, AMD −0.64% and Nvidia −0.28%, and Meta (−1.56%), Alphabet (−1.12%) and Apple (−0.94%) closed lower. Tesla (+1.55%) was the exception going into its Wednesday report.

Morning reports drove the biggest single-stock moves. Hasbro closed +11.21%, Equifax +11.31%, 3M +5.82%, Northrop Grumman +4.64%, KeyCorp +4.42% and Halliburton +1.91%. GM fell 6.83% and GE 3.65%, and RTX ended +0.66%. After the bell, Netflix traded near $64.54, about 6.0% below its $68.67 close. Intuitive Surgical traded near $408.56, about 6.7% lower, and United Airlines about 2.2% lower. Capital One rose about 5.0% to $211.65, Super Micro about 11.3% to $36.14, and SpaceX (ticker SPCX) about 4.2% to $154.19.

On the economic calendar, September housing starts (prior 1.30M) and pending home sales (prior +0.3%) still show no actuals and had no forecasts posted. Street accounts report housing starts fell 5.2% to a 1.22M pace, which would fit with yields easing through the day, but that figure is unconfirmed here. Company actuals are not on the calendar yet either: GE (estimate $2.02), RTX ($1.78), 3M ($2.40), Northrop ($7.23), GM ($3.55), Netflix ($0.82), Intuitive Surgical ($2.61), Capital One ($5.45) and United ($2.60) all show estimates only.

What X is saying

The main story on X was rotation. Posts pointed out that more than 400 S&P 500 stocks rose while the Nasdaq finished flat, and several accounts framed it as money moving out of the AI names and into everything else a day before Meta and Tesla report. The tape agrees: equal-weight beat the index by more than 0.8 points and small caps beat the Nasdaq by almost 1.8. Lower oil and easing yields after a soft housing print were the other reasons given.

On earnings, posts describe Netflix as beating on EPS at $0.87 against $0.82 expected, with revenue in line near $12.9B but a light fourth-quarter outlook and a lower ad forecast. Intuitive Surgical is reported at $3.00 adjusted EPS and $3.05B revenue, both ahead of estimates, but the stock fell on a narrowed outlook and a reported antitrust charge. United is reported at $2.54 against $2.59 expected. SpaceX is reported at $14.6B revenue against about $13B expected. Earlier, GM was described as beating with a new $20B buyback yet trading lower, and 3M as beating and raising guidance. All of these figures are street-reported and unconfirmed.

Insight

What is locked for the close: Calm mood, S&P proxy +0.33%, vol lower, breadth strongly positive and tech lagging. Two days in a row, the index and the average stock have moved in opposite directions. That usually means money is shifting between groups rather than leaving the market. The broad rally today is a healthier sign than Monday's narrow one, but the index still depends on big tech, and Meta and Tesla report Wednesday night. If they disappoint while the rotation trade keeps going, the index can lag even on a day most stocks rise.

Wednesday's lookahead: no major U.S. economic releases are on the calendar. Before the open, Philip Morris (EPS est $2.30, expected move about 3.6%), Thermo Fisher ($6.40, about 4.9%), Abbott ($1.43, about 5.1%), NextEra ($1.20), Danaher ($1.92), AT&T ($0.61), CME ($2.98), Elevance ($4.66, about 7.6%) and Moody's ($4.25) report. After the close it's Meta ($5.86, about 6.1%), Tesla ($0.45, about 5.5%), Lam Research ($2.17, about 6.6%), SAP ($2.03), Texas Instruments ($2.40, about 6.5%), IBM ($2.88, about 6.2%) and CSX ($0.52). Weekly jobless claims land Thursday at 8:30 AM ET (prior 199K), with leading indicators (prior −0.1%) and the Kansas City Fed survey (prior 20) the same day.
