Key numbers
Wednesday, October 21 has nothing on the U.S. economic calendar, so the session runs on earnings. Eight large companies report before the open, led by Philip Morris, Thermo Fisher, Abbott and AT&T, and the evening is the busiest of the week so far with Meta, Tesla, Lam Research, SAP, Texas Instruments and IBM. The calendar has no EPS actuals posted for last night’s reports, so any company result below that isn’t labeled an estimate comes from street accounts and is unconfirmed.
Setup into the open
Tuesday closed Calm. The S&P proxy rose about 0.3% while the Nasdaq proxy slipped about 0.1%, small caps jumped about 1.7% and the Dow proxy about 1.1%, and the vol proxy eased about 0.9%. As of about 6:10–6:16 AM ET the board is mostly flat with tech a touch firmer. The S&P proxy is +0.02%, the Nasdaq proxy +0.20%, small caps −0.30% and the Dow proxy −0.16%. The chip ETF is +0.94% and Nvidia +1.34%. Long Treasuries are −0.31%, the vol proxy +0.17%, and the oil proxy +2.16%, more than reversing Tuesday’s small dip. The dollar proxy is about flat on a stale evening trade, gold is −0.17%, and Bitcoin is near $83,160, about +0.6% from the Eastern midnight mark.
What to watch
Last night’s reports. Netflix (EPS estimate $0.82) is −6.54% premarket and Intuitive Surgical ($2.61) is −7.77%, both near or past their implied moves of about 7.9% and 6.2%. Capital One ($5.45) is +3.39% on a 5:30 AM trade and United Airlines ($2.60) is about −0.9% on a thin early trade. SpaceX ($0.11) is +7.8% and Super Micro +11.3% premarket, and those two are doing most of the work lifting chips and AI hardware this morning.
This morning’s reports. Premarket trades before the numbers show Philip Morris −0.45%, Thermo Fisher −0.34%, Abbott −1.38%, AT&T +1.32%, Elevance +1.81% and NextEra +1.04%. Implied moves are widest for Elevance (about 7.6%), Moody’s (about 6.6%) and Danaher (about 6.1%).
Tonight is the first megacap test of the AI spending story: Meta ($5.86, about 6.1%), Tesla ($0.45, about 5.5%), Lam Research ($2.17, about 6.6%) and Texas Instruments ($2.40, about 6.5%), plus IBM ($2.88) and SAP ($2.03). Meta is −0.37% premarket and Tesla +1.15%. Thursday morning brings P&G, Union Pacific, Lockheed Martin, Honeywell and Blackstone, along with jobless claims (prior 199K) and leading indicators (prior −0.1%). Friday has the flash PMIs and final Michigan sentiment.
What X is saying
The overnight story on X is SpaceX. Posts say its first report as a public company showed revenue near $14.6B, a first profit and a revenue outlook well above estimates, and accounts quote Musk saying AI deployment is limited more by power and cooling than by chips. Several posts tie that to the bid in Nvidia, memory names and Super Micro, and say Korea’s main index rebounded more than 3% after Tuesday’s drop. These are street-reported views, not data.
On the misses, posts say Netflix beat on EPS (about $0.87) and revenue (about $12.9B) but guided the fourth quarter below estimates with lower margins, and that Intuitive Surgical beat (adjusted EPS about $3.00 on $3.05B revenue) but took a $450M antitrust settlement charge and narrowed its outlook. Capital One is reported with adjusted EPS of about $6.69. On macro, posts put Brent near $110–111 a barrel on Middle East supply worries, the 10-year Treasury yield near 5.1%, and UK inflation at 3.5%, above forecast. All of this is street-reported and unconfirmed.
Insight
Two forces are pulling against each other into the open. The AI trade got a lift from SpaceX’s numbers, which helps chips after two shaky sessions. Oil is the drag: a third straight rise toward $110 Brent keeps yields high and kept long Treasuries red this morning. Tuesday’s rotation into small caps and the average stock is giving a little back, which suggests money is moving toward tech ahead of Meta and Tesla tonight rather than away from it.
Desk stance
Publish mood is Calm, matching Tuesday’s close and the live hero. The premarket is close to flat, so mood should hold unless crude or vol pick up after the open. With no data release today, the S&P, vol and crude proxies drive the first hero refresh. No company EPS goes into the summary until the calendar confirms it.
