Tuesday, October 20 is the first heavy morning of earnings week. Housing starts come out at 8:30 AM ET (prior 1.30M) and pending home sales at 10:00 AM ET (prior +0.3%), with no forecasts on the calendar for either. A dozen large reports land before the open, led by GE Aerospace, RTX, 3M, Northrop Grumman and GM, and Netflix headlines the evening. The calendar has no EPS actuals posted yet, so any company result below that isn’t labeled an estimate comes from street accounts and is unconfirmed.

Setup into the open

Monday closed Grinding. The S&P proxy rose about 0.4% and the Nasdaq proxy about 1.2%, the chip ETF gained about 1.6% to snap its losing streak, and the vol proxy fell about 3%. Long Treasuries slipped about 0.7% and crude eased about 0.6%. As of about 6:10–6:17 AM ET the board has turned mixed. The S&P proxy is flat at +0.01%, the Nasdaq proxy −0.34%, small caps +0.10% and the Dow proxy +0.24%. The chip ETF is −0.97% and Nvidia −0.18%. Long Treasuries are +0.44%, the vol proxy +1.57%, and the oil proxy +2.41%, which gives back all of Monday’s dip and more. The dollar proxy is about flat on a stale Monday-afternoon trade, gold is −0.68%, and Bitcoin is near $81,490, about −0.6% from the Eastern midnight mark.

What to watch

Oil and chips. The two things that drove last week’s selloff are back in the premarket: crude is up again and chips are giving back part of Monday’s bounce. If the oil proxy holds a gain of 2% or more into the open, it puts the inflation worry back in front of the AI story, and long Treasuries rising alongside it says some money is already hedging.

Earnings this morning. Northrop Grumman (EPS estimate $7.23, implied move about 6.8%) is out per street accounts with EPS of $7.89 on sales of about $11.1B, a raised 2026 EPS guide of $29.35–$29.75 from $28.60–$29.10, and a record backlog near $110B; none of that is on the calendar yet, and the stock’s last premarket trade is +0.4% with quotes bid higher. Still pending: GE ($2.02, about 4.8%), RTX ($1.78, about 4.3%, +1.8% premarket), 3M ($2.41, about 4.8%, +4.2% premarket on a 6:11 AM trade), GM ($3.55, about 4.9%), plus MSCI, Halliburton, Synchrony, KeyCorp, Equifax, Hasbro and Ally.

After the close it’s Netflix ($0.82, about 8.4%), Intuitive Surgical ($2.61, about 6.5%), Chubb ($6.53), Capital One ($5.45), United Airlines ($2.60, about 5.3%) and East West ($2.69). Wednesday morning brings Philip Morris, Thermo Fisher, Abbott, AT&T and Elevance, and Wednesday night has Meta ($6.54), Tesla ($0.44), Lam Research ($2.17), Texas Instruments ($2.40) and IBM ($2.88). Thursday has weekly jobless claims (prior 199K), and Friday has the flash PMIs and final Michigan sentiment.

What X is saying

The overnight story on X is that Asia and Europe didn’t buy Monday’s chip rebound. Posts say Korea’s main index fell about 3.7%, with Samsung and SK Hynix hit on reports that U.S. big tech is pushing for lower memory prices, and that chip names led Europe lower in its first hour while France held up better than expected. Several accounts list AI-adjacent names like Micron, AMD, CoreWeave and Nebius lower before New York opens. These are street-reported views, not data.

On macro, posts put Brent back above $110 a barrel on Middle East supply worries, with some citing claims of an attack in Saudi Arabia, and accounts cite the U.S. 10-year yield near 5.1%. Others note Nvidia’s GTC conference in Berlin today with Jensen Huang speaking. On Northrop, the read is broadly positive on the raised guide and backlog, with a few accounts flagging thinner margins and a B-21 loss provision. All of this is street-reported and unconfirmed.

Insight

Monday’s bounce was a relief move, and this morning shows how thin that relief was. Oil is the bigger tell than chips: a second leg up in crude while Treasuries rally points to worry about growth and inflation together, which is a harder mix for stocks than a simple tech rotation. Defense and industrials have a chance to lead today if the morning reports look like Northrop’s, which would keep the broad index steady even if the Nasdaq lags.

Desk stance

Publish mood is Grinding, matching Monday’s close and the live hero. The premarket tilt is softer, with vol up and the Nasdaq red, but mood re-scores from realized session moves, so the first hero refresh after the open decides whether it slips. With housing data the only release this morning, the S&P, vol and crude proxies drive it. No company EPS goes into the summary until the calendar confirms it.
