- The close scored Grinding, barely: S&P proxy +0.43%, Nasdaq proxy +1.20%, small caps +0.31%, Dow proxy −0.02%, vol proxy −3.26%, long Treasuries −0.74%, the dollar +0.28%, crude −0.55% and Bitcoin about −0.1%.
- The gains were narrow. The chip ETF rose 1.57%, Amazon 4.97%, Tesla 3.77% and Western Digital 6.10%, but the equal-weight S&P ETF fell 0.33%, utilities lost 1.97% and homebuilders slid after a weak NAHB print that the calendar has not confirmed yet.
- Cleveland-Cliffs closed +16.5% after its report, while Steel Dynamics traded about 6.6% lower after hours on a street-reported EPS miss. Tuesday brings housing starts at 8:30 AM ET, GE, RTX and GM before the open, and Netflix after the close.
Key numbers
Monday, October 19 was the bounce traders were looking for after last week's tech selloff, but only part of the market joined it. The S&P proxy closed +0.43% and the vol proxy fell 3.26%, which scores Grinding, just above the 0.4% line. That is an upgrade from Friday's Rattled close. Most of the lift came from a handful of large tech and chip names, while the average stock finished lower.
Research
What the tape confirms: the Nasdaq proxy gained 1.20%, small caps 0.31% and the Dow proxy was flat at −0.02%. The equal-weight S&P ETF fell 0.33%, which is the clearest sign of how narrow the day was. Long Treasuries dropped 0.74%, so yields rose, the dollar proxy gained 0.28%, the crude proxy slipped 0.55% and gold lost 0.62%. Bitcoin finished about −0.1% near $82,020 on the close tape.
Leaders were in tech. The chip ETF rose 1.57%, Micron 3.02%, AMD 1.70% and Nvidia 1.38%. Storage names did better: Western Digital +6.10% and SanDisk +5.53%. Amazon jumped 4.97% and Tesla 3.77% ahead of its Wednesday report, while Meta (−0.62%), Apple (−0.14%) and Netflix (−1.01%) lagged into their own reports. The morning's premarket chip gain of about 2.4% shrank to 1.57% by the close, so the bounce held but faded.
Outside tech, the board was mostly red. Utilities fell 1.97% and Constellation Energy 3.05%. Financials lost 0.81% and regional banks 0.77%, energy 0.63%, and homebuilders slid after the housing print, with D.R. Horton −2.96%, Lennar −1.58% and the homebuilder ETF −0.82%. Cleveland-Cliffs was the standout, closing +16.46% after its report, and Fifth Third ended +0.34%. Steel Dynamics rose 1.89% in the session, then traded near $229 after its report, about 6.6% below the close.
On the economic calendar, the October NAHB homebuilder index (prior 32, no forecast posted) still shows no actual. Street accounts report it at 29 against an expected 31, the lowest since June 2012. That figure is unconfirmed here. Company actuals are also not on the calendar yet: Cleveland-Cliffs (estimate $0.24), Fifth Third ($1.09), Steel Dynamics ($5.42), Zions ($1.64), Western Alliance ($2.43) and W.R. Berkley ($1.14) all show estimates only.
What X is saying
The main story on X was the end of the chip losing streak. Posts say the Philadelphia semiconductor index snapped eight straight down days, its longest run since 2008, as dip buyers came in ahead of Meta and Tesla on Wednesday. The second story was breadth: several accounts pointed out that big tech carried the index while the equal-weight S&P and most sectors closed lower, and the tape agrees. Amazon's jump was tied to a Morgan Stanley top-pick call, which is street-reported.
On earnings, posts describe Cleveland-Cliffs as beating on profit, with adjusted EPS of $0.28, adjusted EBITDA of $612M against its own $575M guide, and an outlook of about $715M for Q4 and more than $4B for 2027. Steel Dynamics is reported at EPS of $5.26 against estimates near $5.41, with revenue of $6.51B slightly ahead. Zions is reported at $1.78 per share against a consensus near $1.65. Fifth Third was described as beating on profit but missing on revenue. All of these figures are street-reported and unconfirmed.
Insight
What is locked for the close: Grinding mood, S&P proxy +0.43%, vol lower, chips up and breadth negative. The market bought back the AI names it sold last week without broad conviction, and higher yields weighed on rate-sensitive groups like utilities and homebuilders. That leaves the index leaning on the same few stocks going into the heavy part of earnings week. A Grinding close on this breadth is fragile; if the big tech reports disappoint, there is not much underneath to cushion the index.
Tuesday's lookahead: September housing starts at 8:30 AM ET (prior 1.30M) and pending home sales at 10:00 AM ET (prior +0.3%), with no forecasts posted. Before the open, GE (EPS est $2.02, expected move about 4.8%), RTX ($1.78, about 4.3%), 3M ($2.41), Northrop Grumman ($7.23, about 6.8%), GM ($3.55, about 4.9%), Halliburton ($0.58) and Synchrony ($2.48) report. After the close it's Netflix ($0.82, about 8.4%), Intuitive Surgical ($2.61), Chubb ($6.53), Capital One ($5.45) and United Airlines ($2.60). Meta, Tesla, Lam Research, Texas Instruments and IBM follow Wednesday night, and weekly jobless claims land Thursday (prior 199K).
