Chips crack, Dow climbs: a Calm close on Columbus Day

Memory and chip stocks sold off again while oil, energy and Meta carried the rest of the board. The S&P proxy finished −0.06% with vol down about 1.7%, so the close scored Calm. There were no U.S. prints or earnings today; banks report Tuesday morning and CPI lands Wednesday.

Monday, October 12 had nothing on the U.S. economic calendar and an empty earnings slate. Stocks traded a normal session while the cash bond market sat out Columbus Day, so the tape was left to tell its own story. That story was a split one: the S&P proxy finished essentially flat at −0.06%, the Nasdaq proxy lost 0.70%, and the Dow proxy gained 0.34%.

Research

What the tape confirms: the close scored Calm. The S&P proxy moved less than the 0.4% band in either direction and the vol proxy fell 1.74%, so there was no sign of stress in the scoring inputs. That cools Friday’s Grinding close, but it does not flip it. Small caps (−0.38%) sided with the Nasdaq, while the Dow proxy was the only major index proxy in the green.

The weakness was concentrated in chips. The chip ETF (SMH) fell 2.13% in the regular session, with Micron −3.89%, SanDisk −5.97%, Lumentum −9.80% and Nvidia −1.24%. On the other side, Meta rose 3.40%, Salesforce 2.01% and the energy ETF (XLE) 1.44%. Crude was the cross-asset story again: the crude proxy (USO) rose 1.93%, the dollar proxy firmed 0.38%, long Treasuries (TLT) were nearly flat at +0.08% with the cash market closed, and Bitcoin slipped about 0.8% to near $83,100 on the close tape.

What X is saying

From the open, X framed chips as the tape’s punching bag. Street accounts tied the memory selloff to China’s CXMT touting a denser memory design, and several posts called it a fifth straight down day for semis and a three-week low. One widely shared thread added that a Broadcom executive’s comment comparing AI investors to gamblers fed the mood; that quote is street-reported and not confirmed here.

The other thread was breadth. Midday and close posts put roughly 64%–65% of S&P stocks higher with 9 of 11 sectors green, which is why accounts kept calling it rotation rather than risk-off. Those breadth figures are street-reported, not desk data. On oil, posts pointed to fresh drone and missile attacks reported by Saudi Arabia after a deadly weekend strike on Riyadh’s airport, and to Russia continuing to hit energy sites despite an announced energy ceasefire. Street accounts put Brent near $106 and WTI in the low $90s; those are unconfirmed here, while the crude proxy’s +1.93% is the desk close.

Single-name chatter tracked the desk closes: Meta’s bounce was tied to a new AI product launch, and Salesforce to an analyst upgrade. Some posts claimed the VIX itself rose about 3% even as the vol proxy we score on fell 1.74%; the mood uses the proxy, so the Calm call stands.

Insight

What is locked for the close: Calm mood, S&P proxy about flat, vol down about 1.7%, chips heavy and oil firm. The index barely moved because money moved around inside it. The test arrives fast. Tuesday before the open, banks kick off earnings (JPMorgan est $5.94, Goldman $12.90, Wells Fargo $1.85, Citi $2.66, plus Johnson & Johnson $2.53 and UnitedHealth $4.12; no actuals yet), alongside NFIB small business optimism at 6:00 AM ET (prior 98.7) and existing home sales at 10:00 AM ET (prior 4.00M). Wednesday’s high-impact is September CPI at 8:30 AM ET (prior headline +0.4% m/m and +3.4% y/y; core +0.3% m/m and +2.4% y/y; no forecasts posted yet), then the Fed’s Beige Book at 2:00 PM ET.
