- UMich prelim at 10:00 AM ET was the day’s timed print (calendar est 48.0, prior 47.8); Schmid spoke at 9:30 AM ET. Neither has a confirmed actual in the calendar at publish. Delta and New Horizon reported before the open — calendar EPS actuals still null.
- Equities closed Grinding: S&P proxy +0.59%, Nasdaq proxy +0.49%, Dow proxy +0.86%, small caps +0.49%, vol proxy −1.57%, long Treasuries +0.12%, the dollar +0.16%, crude +0.47% and Bitcoin about +0.8% on the close tape.
- X framed a bounce that ignored a soft Michigan read: street posts put sentiment at 46.3 with hotter one-year inflation expectations, Delta EPS miss plus a full-year guide cut on fuel, and a SpaceX spectrum deal crushing telcos while towers ripped. Next week’s high-impact is CPI Wednesday.
Key numbers
Friday, October 9 was a light data day with a tone check. Kansas City Fed President Jeffrey Schmid spoke at 9:30 AM ET, then the preliminary University of Michigan consumer survey for October printed at 10:00 AM ET, where the calendar looked for 48.0 after a 47.8 prior. Neither event has a confirmed actual in the calendar at publish. Before the open, Delta Air Lines led the earnings slate (street mean estimate $1.80, options-implied move about 3.6%) alongside New Horizon Aircraft (estimate −0.08). After the close the calendar was empty. No EPS actuals for Delta or New Horizon are posted yet.
Research
What the tape confirms: equities closed Grinding. The S&P proxy finished +0.59% and the vol proxy fell 1.57%, inside the 0.4%–1.0% grind band with vol soft. The Dow proxy led at +0.86%, while the Nasdaq proxy (+0.49%) and small caps (+0.49%) rose in step. That flips Thursday’s Choppy close, when the Nasdaq proxy was −1.3% on an OpenAI revenue scare and crude was the only clear leader.
Cross-asset, the session was quiet outside equities. Long Treasuries (TLT) scraped +0.12%, the dollar proxy +0.16%, and the crude proxy (USO) held a modest +0.47% after giving back most of Thursday’s Gulf-driven spike in premarket. Bitcoin finished about +0.8% on the close tape versus Thursday’s Eastern session. Delta finished the regular session essentially flat (+0.01%) after its report; New Horizon was +1.31%.
What X is saying
Into the open, X was a bounce tape. Posts put futures higher as Thursday’s chip scare faded and crude eased on reports that Washington will not strike Iran before the midterms. SpaceX’s spectrum deal dominated single-name chatter: street accounts had T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T down high-single to low-double digits while tower names like American Tower and Crown Castle ripped higher. Those are street-reported moves, not desk closes for this recap.
On UMich, street accounts widely reported the preliminary October headline at 46.3 versus estimates clustered around 47.6–48.0, with the prior cited near 48.1 and current conditions plunging to about 44.7. One-year inflation expectations were put near 4.7% from 4.6%. Those are street-reported figures, not confirmed calendar actuals — the calendar still shows only the 48.0 estimate and 47.8 prior.
On Delta, street and brokerage reads had adjusted EPS around $1.72 against estimates near $1.77–$1.80, revenue near $17.6B, and a cut to full-year adjusted EPS guidance to about $5.10–$5.60 from $6.50–$7.50 on a roughly $6B fuel-cost surge. Shares finished the regular session flat. None of those Delta figures are confirmed calendar actuals yet. Into the close, X framed indexes green for the week with the S&P near records despite the soft Michigan read — the bounce “shrugged it off.”
Insight
What is locked for the close: Grinding mood, S&P proxy about +0.6%, vol down about 1.6%, and a broad green board led by the Dow proxy. Soft street Michigan and a Delta fuel cut did not break the rebound from Thursday’s oil-and-chips day. The calendar still has no confirmed UMich or Delta EPS actuals. Markets are closed for the weekend; Monday’s U.S. eco calendar is empty in the feed. Tuesday brings NFIB and existing home sales; Wednesday’s high-impact is CPI (prior headline +0.4% m/m, +3.4% y/y; core prior +0.3% m/m, +2.4% y/y — no forecasts posted yet).
