Monday, October 12 is a positioning day, not a data day. The U.S. economic calendar is empty and both the premarket and after-hours earnings slates are blank. Equities trade as usual for Columbus Day / Indigenous Peoples’ Day; the U.S. dollar bond market is closed, so liquidity in rates will be thinner than a normal Monday. Nothing has printed. The week’s real tape starts tomorrow: big-bank results before Tuesday’s open, then September CPI on Wednesday at 8:30 AM ET.

Setup into the open

Friday closed Grinding: the S&P proxy finished +0.59% with the vol proxy down about 1.6%, the Dow proxy leading at +0.86%, and crude holding a modest +0.47%. As of about 6:25 AM ET that tape is mostly flat into the new week. The S&P proxy is +0.09% premarket, the Nasdaq proxy −0.09%, small caps roughly unchanged (−0.03%), and the Dow proxy +0.11%. Long Treasuries are a touch softer (−0.15%) even with the cash bond market shut, the vol proxy is −0.59%, and the dollar proxy is about flat in thin trade. The clear mover is crude: the oil proxy is +1.17% versus Friday’s close. Bitcoin is near $83,400 on the live tape, about −0.1% versus Sunday’s Eastern midnight mark. Ahead of Tuesday’s reports, JPMorgan is about +0.3% and Goldman about +0.4% in premarket — not a score of the prints, only the pre-report marks.

What to watch

Today’s session is about positioning into two catalysts. Tuesday before the open the calendar lists JPMorgan (EPS estimate $5.94, options-implied move about 3.0%), Goldman Sachs ($12.90, about 3.9%), Wells Fargo ($1.85, about 3.9%), Citigroup ($2.66, about 3.5%), plus Johnson & Johnson ($2.53, about 3.1%) and UnitedHealth ($4.12, about 6.1%). Domino’s and Albertsons are also on the premarket slate. No EPS actuals are posted yet for any of them. After the close Tuesday the calendar is thin (AZZ). Wednesday’s high-impact is September CPI at 8:30 AM ET — the calendar still shows only August priors (headline +0.4% m/m and +3.4% y/y; core +0.3% m/m and +2.4% y/y) with no official forecasts posted. Tuesday also carries NFIB small-business optimism (prior 98.7) and existing home sales (prior 4.00M).

What X is saying

Weekend and overnight street framing treats Monday as a quiet open into a loud week. Week-ahead posts put Tuesday’s bank slate (JPMorgan, Goldman, Wells, Citi) as the start of earnings season and Wednesday’s CPI as the macro hinge before the next Fed update. Street consensus clusters for CPI are circulating well above the August prior on the energy impulse — those are street-reported figures, not calendar estimates, and the calendar still has no forecast. Bond-holiday notes flag thinner rates liquidity while equities trade.

On oil, street accounts are split: some cite a reported Russia–Ukraine pause on energy strikes as a softener, while others keep Middle East supply risk in the premium. The desk read is simpler — the crude proxy is firm about +1.2% premarket versus Friday. Treat geopolitics chatter as unconfirmed until it shows up in settled prices and the calendar.

The rest of the week

Tuesday: bank and healthcare earnings before the open, NFIB at 6:00 AM ET, existing home sales at 10:00 AM ET, and the monthly Treasury balance later. Wednesday: CPI at 8:30 AM ET, Bank of America and Morgan Stanley in the morning slate per street calendars, and the Fed Beige Book at 2:00 PM ET. Thursday: retail sales, PPI, Empire and Philly Fed, and weekly jobless claims at 8:30 AM ET. Friday: import prices and industrial production / capacity utilization.

Insight

Friday’s grind shrugged a soft street Michigan print and a Delta fuel cut. Monday adds no new information — it is a bridge into bank NII/trading/credit reads and the CPI that will decide whether oil’s firmness becomes an inflation problem again. Flat equities with crude up and vol still soft is a holding pattern, not a reset. The first real score comes Tuesday morning once bank actuals hit the calendar, then again Wednesday at 8:30.

Desk stance

Publish mood stays Grinding from Friday’s close and the live hero. Premarket S&P about +0.1% with vol softer is too small to re-score, and it is still pre-open on an empty data day. Re-score after the open from the realized S&P and vol proxies, then again after Tuesday’s bank prints and Wednesday’s CPI. No bank EPS or CPI actual goes into the summary until the calendar confirms it.
