Friday, October 23 was a day when the price of oil mattered more than the price of chips. Crude climbed through the morning on fears of renewed US strikes on Iran, and the crude proxy closed up about 4.3%. Stocks slipped all day without breaking: the S&P proxy finished down about 0.5%, inside the band that scores Choppy, a step back from Thursday's Rattled close. The vol proxy rose only about 1.2%, so this was a grind lower, not a scare.

The split ran the other way from Thursday. Then, chips and big tech fell hard while most stocks rose. Today the chip ETF rose about 0.7% and tech about 0.5%, with Microsoft, Intel and IBM higher, which kept the Nasdaq proxy flat. Everything else gave ground: the equal-weight S&P fell about 0.8%, staples about 1.9%, discretionary about 1.7% and financials about 1.3%. Energy was the only real winner, up about 2.6%. Long Treasuries slipped about 0.5% and the dollar firmed slightly as higher oil pushed up inflation worries, and gold fell about 0.7%.

The Dow proxy fell about 1.2%, twice as much as the S&P proxy, because several of its heavy names fell together: American Express, Goldman Sachs, Caterpillar, Home Depot, UnitedHealth and Visa all lost between 1.5% and 3.7%. American Express was the biggest drag. Posts report adjusted earnings of $4.68 a share against the calendar's $4.48 estimate, but revenue that was street-reported slightly below forecasts, and the company said it would cut about 5% of its staff. On the other side, SLB rose about 7.1% and First Citizens about 8.2% after reports that posts describe as beats, while Infosys fell about 6.9% on street-reported misses.

Research

Two threads from today will carry into next week. The first is oil. Posts report US crude futures settled at $103.27 a barrel, up 3.8%, and Brent above $117 for the first time since March, while the Energy Department authorized an emergency exchange of up to 400,000 barrels from the strategic reserve to cover a Louisiana refinery disruption. The second is jobs. The Amex cuts landed alongside job-cut news from Barclays, eBay and Netflix, and accounts tied them to companies spending on AI to save on staff. The morning's flash PMIs, per posts, showed manufacturing at 56.0 against 55.5 expected and services at 57.9 against 58.0, which reads as steady growth with price pressure, not a slowdown.

What X is saying

Posts say oil was the story: accounts flagged Brent's run toward its high of the year and framed it as an inflation problem. Posts also tied the American Express drop to its 3,500 job cuts and grouped it with other layoffs as a sign that AI is starting to replace white-collar roles. These are claims from posts, not confirmed facts.

Insight

Thursday was a bet against AI spending; Friday was a bet on higher energy costs, and those hit different stocks. When crude rises this fast, it works like a tax on consumers and on rate-sensitive stocks, which is why staples, discretionary and banks fell while energy rose. Tech holding flat says the chip selloff did not deepen, but it did not reverse either. The question for Monday is whether oil keeps climbing over the weekend. If it does, the S&P proxy could slip toward the −1% line that scores Rattled. If it doesn't, the market goes into a busy earnings week with only a mild loss behind it.

SCENARIOS
Rattled
If crude keeps climbing over the weekend on Iran headlines…
Energy keeps rising and the S&P proxy slips past −1%, led by consumer and bank stocks.
Grinding
If oil cools and chips keep rebounding…
Big tech leads a modest bounce and the S&P proxy gains between 0.4% and 1%.
Calm
If Monday is quiet with no major release…
The S&P proxy moves less than 0.4% as traders wait for the week's bigger reports.
Bleeding
Tail case: strikes resume and oil spikes sharply…
The vol proxy jumps 10% or more and selling spreads to every group outside energy.
