Thursday, October 22 opens with the week’s first real economic print, weekly jobless claims at 8:30 AM ET, followed by leading indicators at 10:00 and the Kansas City Fed survey at 11:00. The bigger story is last night’s earnings. Tesla, Lam Research and IBM are all down hard premarket, and the AI trade that SpaceX lifted on Wednesday is giving it back. The calendar has no EPS actuals posted for last night’s reports, so any company result below that isn’t labeled an estimate comes from street accounts and is unconfirmed.

Setup into the open

Wednesday closed Grinding. The S&P proxy rose about 0.5% and the Nasdaq proxy about 1.1%, the chip ETF gained about 1.9% and the vol proxy eased about 0.9%. As of about 6:08–6:19 AM ET the board is red across the indexes, with tech leading. The S&P proxy is −1.01%, the Nasdaq proxy −1.78%, small caps −0.86% and the Dow proxy −0.65%. The chip ETF is −3.34%, Nvidia −2.21%, AMD −4.47% and Micron −3.36%. Money is moving into long Treasuries (+0.61%) and the vol proxy is +3.28%. The oil proxy is +1.76% after a small dip Wednesday. Gold is −1.13%, the dollar proxy is about flat on a 2:45 AM trade, and Bitcoin is near $81,970, about −1.1% from the Eastern midnight mark.

What to watch

Last night’s reports. Lam Research (EPS estimate $2.17) is −8.36% premarket, past its implied move of about 6.1%. IBM ($2.88) is −4.79% and Tesla ($0.45) is −4.44%, both close to their implied moves of about 6.2% and 4.7%. Meta is −1.50%, Texas Instruments ($2.40) −1.00% and SAP ($2.03) about flat. CSX ($0.52) is +2.29% on an early trade. SpaceX, Wednesday’s leader, is −2.47%.

This morning’s reports. Premarket trades before the numbers show P&G +1.00%, Valero +2.00%, Spotify +3.74%, Lockheed +0.63%, Honeywell −2.20% and Nokia −5.85%. Implied moves are widest for argenx (about 8.8%), Nokia (about 8.0%) and CBRE (about 7.6%), with Spotify near 7.2%.

After the close: Newmont ($1.94, about 4.0%), Western Digital ($4.09, about 7.0%), Bloom Energy ($0.71, about 8.4%), Comfort Systems ($12.70, about 13.7%) and Deckers ($1.82, about 8.4%). Western Digital is −3.11% and Bloom −5.33% premarket with the chip and AI-power names. Friday morning has the flash PMIs (priors 57 manufacturing and 58.7 services) and final Michigan sentiment (prior 48.1), plus American Express ($4.48) and SLB ($0.62) before the open.

What X is saying

Posts put most of the overnight drop on Tesla’s call. Accounts say Tesla beat on adjusted EPS (about $0.48) with revenue near $28.05B, but cut its 2026 spending plan to about $20B from $25B, which traders read as a hit to chip and AI-hardware demand. Lam Research is reported with record revenue of about $8.22B and adjusted EPS of $2.20, but a December-quarter outlook only around expectations. Texas Instruments and IBM are also reported as beats that are trading lower anyway. Meta is said to have beaten and raised the floor of its spending guide, rising after hours before slipping premarket. These are street-reported and unconfirmed.

On macro, posts say Asia sold chip stocks hard overnight, with Korea’s main index down more than 3.5%, and that Brent is back above $111–112 a barrel after reported attacks on Saudi oil facilities. Several accounts cite comments from President Trump on Iran as adding to the risk-off tone. All of this is street-reported and unconfirmed.

Insight

This is a tech-led drop, not a broad panic. The Nasdaq proxy is falling almost three times as much as the Dow proxy, and the biggest losers are chips and chip equipment. Beats are being sold because investors are focused on spending plans and outlooks, and Tesla’s capex cut hits the part of the market that rallied hardest on SpaceX yesterday. Oil and the bid in Treasuries add a second, defensive layer. Jobless claims are the first chance for data to change the tone; a low print keeps the focus on earnings and oil.

Desk stance

Publish mood is Grinding, matching Wednesday’s close and the live hero. The premarket is pointing lower, with the S&P proxy down about 1% and vol up more than 3%, so the first hero refresh after the open may well move off Grinding if that holds. Jobless claims at 8:30 and the chip ETF’s first hour drive that call. No company EPS goes into the summary until the calendar confirms it.
