Key numbers
Monday, October 19 opens a heavy earnings week on a light data day. The only U.S. release is the NAHB homebuilder sentiment index at 10:00 AM ET, with a prior of 32 and no forecast on the calendar. Cleveland-Cliffs and Fifth Third report before the open, and steelmaker Steel Dynamics leads a group of regional banks and insurers after the close. The calendar has no EPS actuals posted yet, so every company result below that isn’t labeled an estimate comes from street accounts and is unconfirmed.
Setup into the open
Friday closed Rattled. The S&P proxy fell about 1.1%, the vol proxy jumped about 8% and crude rose about 2.8%, capping a week that street accounts describe as the Nasdaq’s worst in months, with chip stocks down eight sessions in a row. As of about 6:15–6:20 AM ET the board is green and led by tech. The S&P proxy is +0.51% premarket, the Nasdaq proxy +1.09% and small caps +0.45%, while the Dow proxy is about flat on a 6:02 AM trade. The chip ETF is +2.41% and Nvidia +1.33%. Long Treasuries are +0.05%, the vol proxy is −2.01%, and the oil proxy is −0.49%. The dollar proxy is about flat on a stale 2:24 AM trade, gold is about flat, and Bitcoin is near $82,410, roughly unchanged versus the Eastern midnight mark.
What to watch
Whether the bounce holds past the open. A +1% Nasdaq morning after a week like last week says little by itself; the test is whether chips keep their gains once cash trading starts and whether the vol proxy keeps falling. With almost no data today, the tape is mostly a positioning story ahead of Tuesday and Wednesday.
Earnings this morning. Cleveland-Cliffs (EPS estimate $0.24, options-implied move about 10%) is +11.2% premarket. Street accounts report adjusted EPS of $0.28 on revenue of about $5.6B, a bit under the roughly $5.7B expected, plus a Q4 adjusted EBITDA guide near $715M and a 2027 outlook above $4B; none of that is on the calendar yet. Fifth Third (estimate $1.09, about 5.9%) is still pending. After the close it’s Steel Dynamics ($5.42, about 8.8%), which gets a direct read from Cliffs, along with W.R. Berkley ($1.14), Crown Holdings ($2.25), AGNC ($0.39), Wintrust ($3.29), Zions ($1.64) and Western Alliance ($2.43).
The rest of the week is where the AI question gets answered. Tuesday brings housing starts (prior 1.30M) and pending home sales (prior +0.3%), GE ($2.02), RTX ($1.78), 3M, Northrop and GM ($3.55) before the open, then Netflix ($0.82), Intuitive Surgical, Capital One and United Airlines after the close. Wednesday night has Meta ($6.54), Tesla ($0.44), Lam Research ($2.17), Texas Instruments ($2.40) and IBM ($2.88). Thursday has weekly jobless claims (prior 199K), and Friday has the flash PMIs and final Michigan sentiment.
What X is saying
Most overnight posts frame this as a dip-buying bounce in AI and chip names after last week’s selloff, which accounts tie to worries about AI financing and debt. Many add the same caution: a green Monday after an eight-day chip slide doesn’t confirm a bottom, and the real test is Meta and Tesla guidance on Wednesday. Some posts played up 1987-crash anniversary fears, which the green futures have mostly answered for now. These are street-reported views, not data.
On macro, posts say crude is lower after the U.S. waived new Russia sanctions and tariffs, which could free up more Russian fuel exports, while tanker and shipping risks near the Middle East keep a floor under prices. Accounts also cite China’s Q3 GDP at +4.5%, slightly ahead of forecasts, and weaker markets in Japan and Europe overnight. On Cleveland-Cliffs, posts split between a revenue miss and a profit beat with a strong 2027 outlook, and the stock’s premarket move says buyers are focused on the outlook. All of this is street-reported and unconfirmed.
Insight
Last week’s selloff was about one theme, AI spending and how it gets funded, and this week puts that theme in front of the companies that do the spending. That makes today a holding pattern with a bullish tilt: softer vol, lower crude and a chip bounce all help, but none of them answer the question that drove the selling. A bounce that fades by midday would say traders want to see Wednesday’s numbers first. Lower oil is the cleaner positive, since it eases the inflation worry that came with last week’s jump in crude.
Desk stance
Publish mood is Rattled, matching Friday’s close and the live hero. The premarket tape argues for a calmer read, but mood re-scores from realized session moves, so the next hero refresh after the open decides whether the bounce earns an upgrade. With no high-impact data today, the S&P and vol proxies drive it. No company EPS goes into the summary until the calendar confirms it.
