Wednesday, November 4 was the market's answer to the midterms. Futures fell overnight as Democrats were projected to win both the House and the Senate, then turned higher before dawn, and by the close the Dow proxy was up about 3.1%, the S&P proxy about 1.6% and small caps about 1.5%. With the vol proxy down about 9.4% and gains broad, the close scores Euphoric.

The rally was broad, but it ran around the chipmakers rather than through them. The equal-weight S&P rose about 1.9%, beating the index, and eight of eleven sector groups gained, led by consumer stocks at about +4.2%. Microsoft rose about 6.7% and Amazon about 6.2%. The chip ETF fell about 2.7%, with Micron down about 7.0% and Nvidia about 3.1%, and AMD kept only about 1.0% after its earnings. Crude sank about 8.0% and energy about 4.7%, while gold rose about 3.7%, long Treasuries about 0.8% and Bitcoin about 4.0%.

The companies spending on AI rallied while the chipmakers they buy from fell. · Closing quotes, Nov 4, 4:00 PM ET

ADP payrolls rose by 86,000 in a street report, against a 69,000 estimate, and ISM services came in at 54.5 against the calendar's 54.6 forecast. McDonald's rose about 6.5% and Uber about 4.9% after their reports, while CVS fell about 12.5% after its own. After the close, AppLovin earned $4.30 a share against the calendar's $3.94 and guided fourth-quarter revenue to $2.37 billion to $2.40 billion against about $2.25 billion expected, and it is up about 19.8% after hours. Qualcomm earned $2.17 against $2.16 and is down about 6.5%, and Arm earned $0.52 against $0.48 and is down about 1.0%, all street-reported.

Research

Wires say US crude futures settled at $88.12 a barrel, down 8.29%, and Brent fell below $100 for the first time since October 7. Qualcomm said it expects more than $650 million of data center revenue this quarter and is raising prices to cover higher chip input costs. Arm forecast royalty revenue growing about 20% a year through fiscal 2031 after partners shipped a record 10 billion Arm-based chips in one quarter. Options had priced about 12.5% for AppLovin.

What X is saying

Posts say the Street read the sweep as gridlock, and wires tied the rally to hopes for a quicker end to the Iran war and lower oil. Others call the chip slide a rotation inside AI: one post says Wall Street bought the companies paying for AI and sold the ones getting paid, and another says some traders fear Democrats could slow the AI buildout. Some posts say volatility was simply sold once the event passed.

Insight

The day split the AI trade in two: the companies that spend on data centers jumped while the chipmakers they buy from fell, even after AMD's beat. That gap is the turn in the story. Lower oil and lower yields gave the rest of the market a reason to rise together. Thursday's jobless claims at 8:30 AM ET are the first test of whether that broad bid holds once the election is out of the way.
