- Weekly jobless claims at 8:30 AM ET were the day’s print; the calendar still shows only the 200K estimate (prior 197K) with no confirmed actual at publish. Wholesale trade and Musalem’s speech likewise have no calendar actuals.
- Equities closed Choppy: S&P proxy −0.43%, Nasdaq proxy −1.34%, Dow proxy +0.11%, small caps −0.05%, vol proxy +1.95%, long Treasuries +0.93%, the dollar −0.19%, crude +2.58% and Bitcoin −1.29%.
- X framed an oil-and-chips day: street reports put claims at 197K, PepsiCo up after a beat-and-cut, and an FT OpenAI revenue note hitting semis into the close. Friday brings Fed’s Schmid and the UMich prelim (est 48.0).
Key numbers
Thursday, October 8 centered on weekly jobless claims at 8:30 AM ET, where the calendar looked for 200K after a 197K prior, then August wholesale trade at 10:00 AM ET (prior 1.3%, no estimate) and St. Louis Fed President Alberto Musalem at 1:40 PM ET. None of those events has a confirmed actual in the calendar at publish. PepsiCo led the before-the-open slate with an EPS estimate of $2.29, alongside NovaGold, AngioDynamics, Helen of Troy, Tilray and Byrna; after the close it was Oil-Dri and Park Aerospace. No EPS actuals for any of them are posted in the calendar yet.
Research
What the tape confirms: equities closed Choppy. The S&P proxy finished −0.43% and the vol proxy rose 1.95%, inside the tight-range band with vol well short of the 5% line that would harden the read. The Nasdaq proxy took the real hit at −1.34%, while the Dow proxy scraped +0.11% and small caps were essentially flat (−0.05%). That is a different shape from Wednesday’s Calm close, when small caps led the damage and large caps barely moved.
Cross-asset, the session belonged to energy and duration. The crude proxy (USO) closed +2.58% after a 3%+ premarket jump on Gulf shipping attacks, long Treasuries (TLT) recovered +0.93% as yields eased off Wednesday’s multi-decade highs, the dollar proxy slipped 0.19%, and Bitcoin was about −1.3% versus Wednesday’s Eastern midnight open. PepsiCo finished the regular session +3.95% after its report; Applied Digital was +0.17% and Levi Strauss −2.43% on the day after Wednesday’s after-hours prints.
What X is saying
Overnight and into the open, X was an oil tape. Posts put Brent roughly $104–$105 and WTI near $91–$93, up about 4% to 5%, tied to tanker attacks in the Gulf and Strait of Hormuz plus reports that Washington is weighing new Iran strike options. Futures opened soft on that spike and on yields still near multi-decade highs, with the 10-year cited around 5.3% early.
On claims, street accounts widely reported initial claims at 197,000 for the week ended October 3, below the 200K estimate, with the prior week revised to about 199K and continuing claims near 1.716 million. Those are street-reported figures, not confirmed calendar actuals. The read on X was that layoffs stay low, which keeps the hike-by-year-end message from Wednesday’s minutes alive even as oil and chips dominated the afternoon.
Into the close the timeline split. Energy and a handful of consumer names held the Dow green while semis sold off hard after an FT report that OpenAI’s annualized revenue run-rate was about $20 billion below what had been circulating. Street closes put the S&P 500 near 7,765 (−0.47%), the Nasdaq Composite near 27,193 (−1.25%) and the Dow about +0.1%. On PepsiCo, street and brokerage reads had adjusted EPS at $2.34 against a $2.29 estimate, revenue around $25.3B, and a cut to the full-year earnings growth outlook; shares were quoted higher all session. None of the PepsiCo figures are confirmed calendar actuals yet.
Insight
What is locked for the close: Choppy mood, S&P proxy about −0.4%, vol up nearly 2%, Nasdaq down more than 1% and crude still up about 2.6%. Index calm-ish hides a market rotating into energy and out of AI infrastructure on one revenue scare, while a soft street claims print did little to offset oil. Friday brings Kansas City Fed President Schmid at 9:30 AM ET and the preliminary University of Michigan survey at 10:00 AM ET (estimate 48.0, prior 47.8), with Delta Air Lines before the open.
