IN SHORT
  • September CPI is at 8:30 AM ET. The calendar shows priors only: headline +0.4% m/m and +3.4% y/y, core +0.3% m/m and +2.4% y/y. Street accounts put consensus at +0.6% headline (3.6% y/y) and +0.2% core, so energy is expected to do most of the work.
  • Premarket vs Tuesday’s close: S&P proxy +0.24%, Nasdaq +0.03%, small caps +0.35%, Dow +0.42%, long Treasuries +0.24%, vol −0.66%, crude +0.56%. The chip ETF is −0.35% and Micron −1.1%.
  • Before the open: Bank of America (EPS est $1.11) is −1.35% after Treasury announced $1.21B in penalties; BlackRock (est $14.01) is +3.46% on a street-reported $15.93; ASML (est $12.47) is flat after reporting overnight. Morgan Stanley ($2.83) is +0.7% ahead of its report.

Wednesday, October 14 is CPI day. September consumer prices land at 8:30 AM ET, the Fed’s Beige Book follows at 2:00 PM ET, and the second round of bank earnings comes before the open: Bank of America, Morgan Stanley, BlackRock, State Street and Progressive, plus ASML, which reported overnight in Europe, and Fastenal. The calendar has no EPS actuals posted yet, so every company number below that isn’t labeled an estimate comes from street accounts and is unconfirmed.

Setup into the open

Tuesday closed Calm for a second straight day: the S&P proxy finished flat and the vol proxy barely moved, while Citi and J&J fell more than 5% after their reports. As of about 6:15–6:25 AM ET the board is modestly green. The S&P proxy is +0.24% premarket, the Nasdaq proxy +0.03%, the Dow proxy +0.42% and small caps +0.35%. Long Treasuries are up about 0.24% into the print, the vol proxy is −0.66%, and the oil proxy is +0.56%. The dollar proxy is about −0.1% on a stale 4:00 AM trade. Chips are still soft: the chip ETF is −0.35%, Micron −1.1% and Applied Materials −0.4%, while Nvidia is +0.2%. Bitcoin is near $83,280, about −0.4% versus the Eastern midnight mark.

What to watch

CPI first. The calendar lists September headline CPI with a prior of +0.4% m/m and +3.4% y/y, and core with a prior of +0.3% m/m and +2.4% y/y. It has no forecasts. Street accounts put consensus at +0.6% m/m and 3.6% y/y for the headline, with core at +0.2% m/m and about 2.5% y/y. That gap means a hot headline on its own is mostly energy; core is the number that moves rate expectations.

Banks and asset managers next. Bank of America (EPS estimate $1.11, options-implied move about 2.9%) is −1.35% premarket. On Tuesday, Treasury announced more than $1.21 billion in penalties against the bank over anti-money-laundering and sanctions failures, and the bank said Q3 will include a $1.2 billion charge worth about 17 cents a share. Morgan Stanley ($2.83, about 3.4%) is +0.7% and State Street ($3.65, about 3.7%) about +1.0% ahead of their reports. BlackRock ($14.01, about 4.1%) is +3.46%. Street accounts report adjusted EPS of $15.93, revenue of $7.75B and about $205B of net inflows, but the calendar has not posted the actual. Progressive ($4.46) and Fastenal ($0.34) round out the morning. After the close it’s Home BancShares ($0.64) and Equity Bancshares ($1.31).

ASML ($12.47 estimate, about 4.6%) is the chip read. Street accounts report record sales of about €11.66B, EPS of €12.95, a 57.5% gross margin, a full-year range raised to €44–45B, and a company comment that planned 2027–28 supply won’t fully meet demand. The ADR is only −0.05% premarket, a day after chip-equipment names were sold hard. Thursday brings TSMC ($4.45), Schwab, PNC, U.S. Bancorp and BNY, plus retail sales (prior +1.2%), PPI (prior +0.4% m/m, +5.4% y/y), Empire State, Philly Fed and jobless claims.

What X is saying

Almost every overnight post leads with CPI. The common framing is that energy will push the headline up and core will decide the Fed path, with several accounts tying the stakes to whether the Fed needs to hike again. Oil posts point to fresh Middle East attacks lifting supply worries, which is consistent with the firmer crude proxy but not confirmed in settled prices. These are street-reported views, not data.

On earnings, ASML posts are almost uniformly upbeat on demand running ahead of capacity, though some flag that sales were roughly in line and the beat came from margins and a one-time gain. BlackRock posts focus on the inflow beat, with AUM slightly light of estimates. Bank of America posts center on the penalty, and some note Tuesday’s lesson that Citi beat and still fell 5.6%. All earnings figures here are street-reported and unconfirmed.

Insight

The index has gone nowhere for two sessions while single names moved hard, and the market treated good bank numbers as already priced. That leaves CPI as the one input that can move the whole board. Bonds are bid into the print and vol is soft, so positioning leans toward relief. An in-line core that confirms the energy-only story would fit that lean, and a hot core would catch it offside. ASML’s demand comments give chips a floor to argue from, but the group stays hostage to yields this morning.

Desk stance

Publish mood is Calm, matching Tuesday’s close and the live hero. With CPI now inside three hours and the S&P proxy well under 0.4%, Waiting is armed for the next hero refresh before the print. Re-score after 8:30 AM ET from the realized S&P and vol proxies, and again after the open. No company EPS goes into the summary until the calendar confirms it.
