Key numbers
Wednesday, October 7 is built around one release: the minutes from the Fed's September meeting at 2:00 PM ET. August consumer credit follows at 3:00 PM ET, with the calendar looking for $15.0B after $18.1B in July. Neither has printed. There are no earnings before the open; after the close, Applied Digital (EPS estimate −$0.26) and Levi Strauss ($0.36) lead a short slate with Richardson Electronics and Resources Connection. Thursday brings weekly jobless claims and Friday the preliminary University of Michigan survey.
Setup into the open
Tuesday closed Grinding: the S&P proxy finished +0.56% and the Nasdaq proxy +0.45%, with the vol proxy down 2.4% and long Treasuries up 0.2%. Small caps were the soft spot at −0.73%. As of about 6:20 AM ET that is fading: the S&P proxy is −0.14%, the Nasdaq proxy −0.44%, small caps −0.55% and the Dow proxy −0.37%. Long Treasuries are down 0.69%, giving back more than Tuesday's gain, the vol proxy is up about 2.2% and crude is up about 0.6%. Constellation Brands, which reported after Tuesday's close, is down about 4.5% premarket; its actual EPS is not yet confirmed in the calendar, so this brief does not score the beat or miss.
What to watch
The minutes matter for the October decision more than for September's. The useful read is how many officials wanted to keep tightening and how much weight they put on long-term yields doing the work for them. Consumer credit lands an hour later and rarely moves the tape. The bond market is the bigger tell before 2:00: a weak long end into the release raises the bar for the minutes to calm things down.
What X is saying
The overnight conversation is that records and stress are running side by side. Posts widely cite the 10-year near 5.31%, level with Monday's highest close in about 24 years, and point to Tuesday's 3-year auction clearing at the highest yield since 2006 with a 10-year sale due before the minutes. Traders put the odds of an October hike near 20%. Previews frame September's move as priced, with the open question being how divided the committee was about doing more.
Oil is the second thread. Accounts report Brent back above $101 on stepped-up attacks on tankers and Saudi targets plus a Gulf storm, though some of those strikes are described as unconfirmed. Chip stocks fell in Asia and then Europe, led by chipmaking-equipment names, and US semis are picking that up premarket. Elsewhere, India raised its policy rate 25 basis points to 5.50%, and crypto is soft after a long-liquidation flush. These are street-reported figures, not confirmed calendar data.
Insight
Tuesday's record came with the long end calm. This morning the long end and oil are both moving against equities at the same time, and the weakness is concentrated in the Nasdaq and small caps, the two groups most sensitive to rates. That makes the bond tape around the 10-year auction and the minutes the real driver. A narrow AI-led rally can absorb a soft open, but it has a harder time absorbing yields breaking to new highs.
Desk stance
Publish mood stays Grinding from Tuesday's close; a −0.14% premarket S&P is not enough to re-score, though the vol proxy is worth watching. Re-score after the open and again after the 2:00 PM minutes from the realized S&P and vol proxies. No consumer credit actual goes into the summary until the calendar confirms it.
